Curing a Life-Long Phobia: Nell's Story

by B. Nadine Featherkile, M.S.

Imagine having a phobia for 50 years of your life and then not having it any more. That’s what happened for Nell when her daughter cured her claustrophobia by using the NLP Phobia Cure. Here is her story as told by her daughter, Nadine Featherkile:

A couple of summers ago, I cured my mother’s claustrophobia that had hampered her for over 50 years.

While Mom worked as a “burner” in the shipyards in Vancouver , Washington , during World War II and she had an experience that brought on a mild case of claustrophobia.

She was in an internal area of the ship that had only a small opening for an exit. As more and more burners came into the small area to work, each burner’s set of hoses (connected to their torches) added to the accumulation of hoses passing through the exit hole and further constricted the exit. In addition, each torch increased the temperature in the area. Mom started to worry that should there be a fire (a much too common and extremely dangerous occurrence), there wouldn’t be enough room to get our through the exit hole. Her “lead man” noticed Mom’s anxiety and told her to “get out of here, Nell,” which she did promptly.
When I worked with Mom to cure the claustrophobia I recognized that heat was an important component of the phobia, so I gave her a “temperature adjustment” resource in addition to the usual re-learning.
Note: a “burner” uses an acetylene torch to cut holes, large and small, in the steel plates of the ship.
